Meditation + Dance = Your New Favorite Activity?

by New Age on April 20, 2010

I bet you didn’t know that…

It’s surprising to some, but dance and meditation have more in common then you may think!

Now this may not make sense immediately, but remember that there are many types of passive and active meditations and dancing meditation just happens to be a form of active meditation!

A quick refresher on active meditation:

Active meditation is about being conscious of the movements of your body. With active meditation, rather than blocking out the external environment you become deeply aware of it. Just remember to stay present and enjoy the moment and don’t over analyze your dancing moves. When you dance for extended periods of time, you go into the state of flow and you connect with your innerself. This is a spiritual form of active meditation that allows the body, mind and soul to flow naturally together.

Most dancing meditation sessions last for approximately an hour and you can purchase guided audios with music to take you through your practice.

This is great news for all of you go-getters out there who can’t even imagine sitting in one place for an extended period of time. Here’s a link to a YouTube video on Sufi Whirling, a type of dance meditation, for you to check out!

Hopefully this will give you a better idea of what I’m talking about!

This video is an Osho Sufi whirling video and Osho is a famous spiritual guru. Osho is a fan of active meditations and has created numerous types of active meditations programs. Learn more about Osho here: Osho Meditation

You might be wondering if you’ll the same benefits of meditation with dancing meditation and the answer is YES.

So don’t be shy and get your dancing shoes on today! It’s a fun way to start meditating if you’re new to the practice or if you already meditate on a regular basis, mix things up with dancing meditation!
